WordPress 4.5 “Coleman” is out, but why should you care?

Well you should always install new version of WordPress (after backing everything up of course) because releases have numerous bug fixes and security updates. In addition, there are usually tons of “under the hood” improvements that help the speed and reliability of your website. Let me list what else is new with WordPress 4.5.

Formatting shortcuts

WordPress 4.5 has tons of new formatting shortcuts you can use to format your text without going to the toolbar. It’s very similar to Markdown after a fashion. This allows you to insert horizontal lines, style text with like bold, italic, etc., and do other basic formating. The is a great way to spend up your blogging and clean up your workflow when writing for your website.

WordPress 4.5 has tons of new previews to let you know how you site will look on a desktop, browser, mobile device and more. This is a great way to make sure that your site will look good not matter what device your customers are using to browse it.

Misc Improvements

Smart Image Resizing

Generated images now load up to 50% faster with no noticeable quality loss. It’s really cool.

Selective Refresh

The customizer now supports a comprehensive framework for rendering parts of the preview without rewriting your PHP code in JavaScript.

Script Loader Improvements

Better support has been added for script header/footer dependencies. New wp_add_inline_script() enables adding extra code to registered scripts.

Better Embed Templates

Embed templates have been split into parts and can be directly overridden by themes via the template hierarchy.

JavaScript Library Updates

jQuery 1.12.3, jQuery Migrate 1.4.0, Backbone 1.2.3, and Underscore 1.8.3 are bundled.
